Super-Ovulator! Double trouble!
A mother of twin boys was stunned to discover she was a 'super-ovulator' after discovering she was expecting twins again.
Katy Walton gave birth to sons Noah and Bailey Rivington in 2010 with no previous history of twins in the family. But the 35-year-old was left speechless in September after an early scan confirmed she was expecting twin boys again with new husband Ross.
A twin specialist told Mrs Walton, from Haddenham, Buckinghamshire, this could be down to her releasing two eggs each month rather than one - also known as 'super-ovulation'. 'The first time around, I didn't think that having twins was even a possibility. I can't describe the shock of learning that there were two babies in there,' she said. 'When I got pregnant this time, people started joking that it might be twins again, which I obviously laughed off. 'Then when we found out it actually was twins, I didn't speak for about three days. 'It was proper shock. Ross was over the moon but he kept asking me if I was OK because I was literally stunned by the news.' Mrs Walton had a scan at the London Ultrasound Centre with a twins expert who told her all about super-ovulation. The phenomenon normally refers to fertility treatment, but the fact that it has happened twice naturally suggests I'm a 'super-ovulator' producing two eggs every cycle. 'There's no way of knowing whether or not it happens every time, because of course I'm not trying to get pregnant every single month, but he said it's likely that's the case,' she said. 'We joke that I'm like an ark. Everything is two by two. Noah and Bailey are pleased as punch that they're going to have a baby brother each to play with. 'Now I am over the shock, it's OK. At least I know what I am doing after last time. With only one baby, it might feel like half a job. 'It's going to be a magical experience for the whole family.' After giving birth to Noah and Bailey, newly single, she co-wrote a book about her experience simply called 'Twins', under her maiden name Katy Hymas. She hoped to support other families in a similar situation after realising most parenting books neglected multiple births - and never thought she'd need to return to the advice herself. But after marrying 33-year-old business consultant Ross and becoming pregnant last year, Katy had to ready herself for another pair of newborns, due in May. She said: 'I wrote the book because there wasn't enough advice for parents with twins. 'There might be one or two pages in a parenting book. But I really wasn't expecting to need the advice myself.
'With the boys, it was life-changing as there are some really unique challenges in having multiples. It has such an impact on your experience of motherhood as you can't indulge yourself in one baby. 'There is nothing discreet about tandem breastfeeding. Any hope of sitting in a coffee shop feeding one baby would be impossible. 'Two breasts and two babies isn't easy. I should have been given more nipples to be able to cope, like a cat. 'It is definitely hard work. I know what I am in for in a few months' time and I don't know whether that makes it better or worse.
'The financial impact is very hard as well. As a large family we certainly won't be going on any exotic holidays. We will have to budget and I'll need to get better at meal planning. 'I never expected to have two babies together again so I haven't kept everything from when Noah and Bailey were born. We're starting again with cribs and cots, but I have a few outfits that I've kept.'
Noah and Bailey turn six next week with Mrs Walton anticipating her biggest challenge will be having to stick to a schedule. She runs her own PR consultancy and said getting juggling work, the new twins and the school run is bound to be tricky. 'At least I am going into this knowing how to change a nappy,' she said. 'It doesn't matter how many times people tell you that you won't sleep, nothing prepares you for it. But my expectations are a bit more realistic this time. 'Ross can't wait to be a dad. He's a wonderful role model to my two boys. I don't think we'll be trying for children again in future though - it would be a logistical nightmare.' Written By Kate Pickles Retrieved From:
