Toxoplasma Gondii and Pregnancy

Cats are the common source that toxoplasma gondii come from, those that have infected intestinal tract will cause toxoplasmosis, which in turn the cat feces will be homozygous for possession of toxoplasma gondii, usually within 3 to 4 days will be contagious. If pregnant women are accidentally infected which can spread to their fetus through the maternal placenta, causing the baby with "innate" conditions of amblyopia. If medical drug treatment is not applied immediately after birth, this could lead to serious chance of blindness. Ophthalmologist had point out they had received about 10 cases a year or so with pregnant women having contact with infected cats with toxoplasma gondii ultimately causing "innate" amblyopia conditions to their fetus.

Toxoplasma gondii is a common parasite, when most people got infected, they do not have severe symptoms, mainly appear runny nose, headache and other flu-like symptoms. After 1-3 weeks later, through the human body immune system, the patient will recover. Those who have cats in their home for a long time may already be infected and have antibodies. The only great chance for toxoplasma gondii to transmit through pregnant woman is from the blood and the placenta to the fetus.

Because there is no resistance to the fetus, the symptoms that appear are more serious, ophthalmologist point out that fetal body will also be infected with toxoplasma gondii, but generally most easily found in the eye, scarring occurs in patients with retinal damage retinal function, resulting in a innate amblyopia. If drug treatment is not applied after birth in a timely manner, this will be affected more seriously. As a reminder, pregnant women is best not to feed or even have cats in their home, if do have a cat it would be best to temporarily entrusted to another place, and fruits and vegetables and meat should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before consumption. Usually pregnant women who are infected with toxoplasma gondii, anti-inflammatory drugs will be prescribed treatment, these medical drugs will not affect the fetus.
