Is always important to burp your baby

Many babies cry after feeding or spit out after. Newly become mommy encounters this situation may get really worried about their baby's appetite problems. But in reality after the baby is fed and they spits up, this usually happen when burping the baby is not done well enough.

 

Burp the baby is very important criteria because infant (especially new born) their stomach capacity is small, in the process of feeding air will be trapped, if baby suck more rapidly, more air will be suck inside, if mothers do not help the baby to sweep out the inhaled air, it will make them feel uncomfortable and spit out, if liquid goes into the lungs will likely cause choking, so burping a baby is always very important.

 

Sweeping out the trapped air for the baby is different for each baby, it is best to hear them “burp” before stopping; usually it may take 5-10 minutes to get the trapped air out. Even if the baby felt asleep after feeding burping them is still needed, if burping them after 15 minutes and no burp come out of them, this maybe deal to the sweeping gesture from the mother is not properly use, it is suggest that the mother should inquire a nurse from the Maternal and Child Health Centres to correct and adjust a proper burping skills.

 

 Correct ways to Burp your baby

 

Sit Up Right Pose:

 

Directions:

1. Wrap a clean towel around the baby.

2. Position the baby on an up right position sitting on the mother’s lap.

3. Place one hand across the baby's chest, supporting their chin with the thumb and index finger, allow the baby to lean forward slightly.

4. Gently pat or rub his back with your free hand

 

Shoulder Pose:

 

Directions:

1. Put a clean towel around the baby.

2. Position the baby over one shoulder with baby’s stomach against mother’s chest and with baby’s head resting on mother’s shoulder.

3. Gently pat the baby's back and use a sweep up motion, the palm of the hand should be slightly cupped.

 

 

Tips for burping your baby:

1. Burp the baby after every feeding.

2. Sweeping motion is not too fast; make sure the baby did have a “burp” sound to confirm the trapped air did come out.

3. If feeding halfway the baby spit out, mother may burp the baby first then start feeding again.

4. If no burp comes out of the baby after 10-15 minutes of patting, mother can continue to breastfeed.

5. Do not let the baby lay down after feeding because this will cause throw up.

6. Do not tighten the cap the baby bottle too much because this may affect the baby sucking. After half fed, loosen the bottle cap and then release the trapped air before tighten the cap again, so the baby can reduce the chance of inhalation too much air.

7. Within 1 hour after feeding, baby should keep sleeping on sideway; this position will reduce the chance of vomiting where liquid might goes into the lungs.

8. Pacifiers have a flat shape, the less chance the baby will inhale air when feeding.

9. After feeding, mothers can hold the baby in an up right position to play with them for a while, confirmed that no unusual feelings develop, and then put them to sleep on the bed.

10. Do not wait until the baby is really hungry to feed them, this will increase the baby sucking frequency, increasing the chance of air inhaled.
